I was born in Switzerland, a country with right-hand traffic. I was raised in a world, by traveling to Greece every summer through Italy, by going to the mountains of France every winter, by going to Finland to see my mother’s family, by going to the USA, a country my father cherishes, that the world drives to the right.

Yes, I’m educated and had traveled to the UK & Australia, I knew countries did drive to the left. But I was raised in world where cars had the steering wheel on the left-hand side of the vehicle. Where I had to look left when crossing the street.

Then, one day, I moved to Japan. A country of almost 130 million people. They produce the best cars in the world. And they drive to the left. It’s everything and nothing, but it matters.

It’s what I mean by the driving left metaphor. Not everybody drives to the right.

Understanding how other people, countries, civilizations, traditions evolve within themselves and towards Others will define you as it defined me.

Empathy is my driving force. It forces humility, rigor & honesty.

Driving Left.
